EXT. HYPERION HOTEL. JASMINE GARDEN - NIGHT

Connor is sitting in the garden underneath the jasmine. Angel walks into the garden and sits beside Connor. The boy shifts slightly as if heís afraid to be too close to his father.

ANGEL

Whatícha doing out here?

CONNOR

Thinking.

ANGEL

About what? Youíre only sixteen. Youíre

looking too somber to be sixteen.

CONNOR

Tell me about her. Tell me about my mother.

ANGEL

What did Holtz tell you?

CONNOR

That the both of you killed his family. His wife,

his daughter and baby boy.

ANGEL

Itís true. We did.

CONNOR

But that was a long time ago, right?

ANGEL

Not long enough.

CONNOR

He said she died for me.

ANGEL

She did. Because she loved you.

CONNOR

But she was a demon, like you?

ANGEL

Not like me. Not really.

CONNOR

You think youíre better than her because you

have a soul.

ANGEL

Thatís not what I meant.

CONNOR

So she was a demon like you?

ANGEL

Yes, but she still loved you. You gave her a

soul. You showed her what love is. She

sacrificed herself to bring you into this world.

She was scared but she did it because she

loved you.

CONNOR

Completely?

ANGEL

Completely.

(then)

She wanted me to tell you that youíre the one

good thing she and I did together. She said you

were the only good thing.

CONNOR

Do you believe that?

ANGEL

I do.

CONNOR

Did you love her?

ANGEL

Things didnít work out between your mother

and me.

CONNOR

Youíre not answering my question.

ANGEL

Connor, you have to understand.

CONNOR

Did she love you?

ANGEL

I think she did, but she loved you more. More

than anything.

CONNOR

Holtz said it rained the night I was born. That

the heavens were weeping for the little bastard child

being born of two demons.

ANGEL

Donít think that way. We love you.

CONNOR

How can two demons love?

ANGEL

Iím not lying. She loved you. And I love you.

CONNOR

Darla. That was my motherís name. Tell me

about her.

ANGEL

She loved jasmine because it blooms at night,

like her. She sat here in the very spot youíre

sitting, holding the jasmine.

Angel reaches up for a branch and breaks it off. He gives it to Connor.

ANGEL

Wait here for a moment.

Angel gets up and leaves the garden. Connor is left sitting alone, twirling the jasmine in his slender hands. Angel returns with a book and sits next to Connor.

He opens the book up to a page where Darla is shown. The black and white picture from the book in Dear Boy.

ANGEL

Thereís your mother. She was beautiful.

Connor takes the book and studies her image.

ANGEL

She had blonde hair that shimmered. More

golden than the sun. And she was petite but

extremely strong. Stronger than me, even.

She had a radiant smile, always so elegant.

She loved hats. Loved them. Always had to

have a new hat to match her dress and shoes.

Every move she made was of queenly grace.

She loved Chinese silk and a view, always had

to have a view. And she was intelligent, too.

Smarter than me. She taught me everything -

she was always enthusiastic and creative. I think

that deep inside she was a good person. I got to

know her even more when she was pregnant

with you - the real her.

CONNOR

(then)

I donít know why, but I love her.

ANGEL

Sheís your mother.

(then)

Darla.

CONNOR

(a faint smile)

My mother.

Connor rips the page out of the book and looks at it again.

CONNOR

I want to keep this with me.
