When Buffy woke up, she found herself in the passenger side of Angelus' car, her hands bound with rope. It was still dark outside, and she sat very still for a moment, staring out the window into the pitch black night. Raising her hands to her bruised, tender jaw, she winced in pain.

"Well, good morning, sunshine," Angelus said in a cheerful tone. "I'm sorry about the jaw, Buff, really I am, but I had to do it. I knew you wouldn't come with me any other way, and well, I just couldn't have that, could I? With your Slayer healing, I'm sure it'll be good as new in no time."

"Where are you taking me?" she asked coldly, refusing to look at him.

"I'm taking you away from it all," he told her. "I'm taking you away from Sunnydale, away from the Hellmouth, away from your friends. I'm taking you away from anyone and anything that might come between you and I, Buff. We are gonna be together forever, and you *will* learn to accept that."

"Well, if you really wanted to take away anyone and anything that might come between us, you missed a person," she said sweetly. "You. I will *never* love you, do you understand me? Never!"

"Never say never, Buff," he said calmly. "I mean, betcha never thought you'd be seeing me again, did ya? But here I am. The sooner you learn to accept it, sweetheart, the better off we will both be."

"God, I hate you! You disgust me, do you know that? You may have Angel's body, but you aren't *half* the man he is. You're not a man at all! I could *never* love you," she spat at him. She bit down hard on her lip, determined not to cry. She would *not* let the bastard see how much he was getting to her, how much seeing Angel again was hurting her, even if it wasn't actual Angel residing in there.

"Buff, I'm starting to lose my patience here," Angelus said, his tone taking a sharper edge. "We've already established that I am not Angel. I never will be. Get over it. I don't see what the big deal is, Buff. You say I'm not the man Angel was, but you seem to be forgetting that he wasn't a man either. He was a vampire, only he had a soul to make him feel sorry for being true to his nature. Does that make him better than me? Hell no! He was self-centered, egotistical, and one broody son of a bitch! The truth of the matter, Buff, is that I'm more honest with you than he ever was *and* I never left you, either. That was his doing."

"He did it for me," Buffy countered, feeling her heart breaking a little more with every word. "He did it because he loved me and wanted what was best for me."

"He wanted what was best for him!" Angelus growled. "He did what was best for *him*. He knew that he couldn't be around you and not give in to temptation, and that would mean that he was out of the game, princess, and that I was back in. He couldn't stand that. He also couldn't stand having you as a girlfriend when he knew that he couldn't have you, so he split."

"If you are trying to say that Angel only left because he wasn't going to get any from me, then you can just save it," she said angrily. "Angel is not like that."

"Oh you think your precious Angel is so great, don't you?" he snapped. "Well, let me let you in on a little secret, sweetheart. Your Romeo has been making eyes at that godamn ex-cheerleader that he calls a secretary for some time now."

"Cordelia?" Buffy said in disbelief, letting out a harsh laugh. "He wouldn't give her a second glance."

"You just keep telling yourself that if it helps you sleep at night, but you can't convince me that you are that stupid, Buff," Angelus told her, his eyes trained on the road ahead. "Why do you think he hired her as his secretary? She can't file, she can't type...hell, she can't even make a fucking pot of coffee."

"He hired her because he felt sorry for her."

"He *hired* her because she has legs up to here and looks good in a short skirt," he snorted. "Soul Boy knew that he wouldn't have what he had with you...he wouldn't have perfect it was safe to fuck her from here to next week if he wanted. Don't think he wasn't thinking about putting the make on her either. Your boy has been up to more than you know about, sweetness. There's this frigid cop bitch named Kate that he followed around like a puppy for awhile, 'til she found out what he was. Of course, you know that Faith was around for awhile, and if you think he didn't think about laying her down and spreading her like a tablecloth, you're fucking stupid. Then there's the ex-cheerleader. I think she kinda likes him, too, you know," he said in a confidential tone, giving her a little smirk. "It surprised me when I realized that he wanted her...she doesn't seem like his type. Different strokes, I suppose. Now me, personally I hate the bitch. She doesn't hold a candle to you, and I'd much rather snap her neck than fuck her any day."

"Charming," Buffy sneered. "You know what? If all of your little stories are gonna be that uninteresting, why don't you just not talk, okay? Even if what you are saying is true..." She hesitated a moment, and he knew that she wasn't so sure he was lying anymore. "Even if what you are saying is true, it doesn't matter because I'm still gonna hate you."

"Come on, Buff, don't be that way," he said with a wolfish grin, running his hand up her thigh. When she slapped it away, his smile began to fade. Damn it, I knew I should have brought her little ex- boyfriend's heart to her, he thought to himself, frowning deeply. That would have made her accept always worked with Dru. Nothing said lovin' like an unbeating heart, still warm from being ripped right out of a chest. He growled in frustration, gripping the steering wheel tightly, his eyes beginning to glow golden. He had expected some resistance, but she was being completely unreasonable here. Of all the evil things he was capable of when he was free of that damned soul, he didn't want to do any of them to her. He wanted to love her, and she didn't even fucking appreciate it! Even after he had told her the truth about Soul Boy, she still wasn't warming up any. What was it with this woman? Who did he have to torture, maim, and murder to get on her good side?

He sighed heavily and ran his hand through his thick hair, deciding to take a different approach. "You know, this is all as unexpected and confusing for me as it is for you," he said quietly, venturing a quick look over at her. She was staring out the window, doing her best to completely ignore him. "It was shocking to me when I realized that I was falling in love with you. I tried to deny it, and then I tried to kill you so that it wouldn't be a problem anymore...but I couldn't do it. You know it as well as I do. As many times as I could have killed you, I didn't, and I know you felt the same. You had dozens of opportunities, Buff, but you couldn't kill me. Part of you loves me, too."

"I couldn't kill you because I loved Angel, not you," she said quietly. "It had nothing to do with you."

"Do you remember what you told him, Buff? You told him that you loved *all* of him, man and demon. Well, I'm the demon, sweet, and probably the best part of the package. Buffy, I love you and I'm not gonna run away from it like he did. He was a bastard for leaving you like he did. You can sit there and defend him all you want, but you know deep down that you've always felt the same way."

Buffy didn't respond, keeping her eyes focused on her window. She bit her lip hard, wishing with all of her heart that what he was saying wasn't the truth. There had been many long, lonely nights when she had cried herself to sleep, thinking about how much it hurt to live without him and how amazing it was that she could love him and hate him so much at the same time. She shook her head, trying to pull herself together. It didn't matter now...her Angel wasn't here anymore.

Angelus knew he was getting to her. He could smell her salty tears, smell the sadness pouring off of her in waves like the beautiful fragrance of some tragic blossom that had been crushed under someone's heel. He wanted nothing more than to take her in his arms and comfort her, and it was a strange and disturbing feeling for him. If he could have somehow ripped Angel out of him, he would have beaten the fucking bastard to a bloody pulp for hurting her this way. Fortunately, he had something to cheer her up. He was going to wait until they got to their destination before showing it to her, but what the hell?

Turning on his turn signal, he slowly guided the car off the road and onto the shoulder. Unfastening his seatbelt, he tapped her gently on the shoulder. She looked at him with red rimmed eyes, her tears barely contained. "Why did we stop?" she asked in a raspy voice. "Are you gonna kill me?"

"Don't be silly," he chastised her. "I have a surprise for you. It's a Valentine's present." He climbed out of the car and walked around quickly to her side, opening the door for her before she could jump out herself and flee, and took her firmly by the arm, guiding her to the trunk of his car. "I really think you are gonna love this, Buff," he said with a wide grin. He pressed the button on his keychain, and the trunk sprang open, revealing a bloody, battered corpse.

Buffy sucked in a deep breath, swallowing her scream. "Who is this?" she asked, closing her eyes tightly.

"Open your eyes, Buffy," he said. "I think he's an old acquaintance of yours." He jerked her closer to the trunk, her eyes popping open unwillingly as morbid curiosity got the best of her. He roughly shoved the body over so that she could see the face, and immediately she fell to her knees, wretching up everything that was in her stomach. Even after her stomach had emptied itself, she continued to dry heave there on her knees until she had no energy left. She wiped her mouth with the back of one shaky hand and slowly climbed to her feet.

"How did you even know about him?" she asked, for first time actually feeling afraid of what Angelus was capable of.

"Parker? How could I *not* know about him," Angelus said, a hint of disgust in his voice. "The way he runs his mouth, the whole fucking world probably knows about you and him. No one treats you like that, Buff. He had to pay for using you like some cheap whore and telling all his friends about it like you were just another conquest."

"What he did doesn't compare to what you did to me," she said weakly. "You pretended to be Angel and you told me how horrible I was that first night, and I believed you! Parker might have gone around and ran his mouth, but he could have *never* hurt me the way you did."

"I already explained that, Buff," Angelus said. "I was just trying to get to you so that maybe I wouldn't love you anymore. Look, I did this for you."

"You did this for me?" she asked incredulously. "You killed a human being for me?"

"I wouldn't call him a human being," Angelus snorted.

"Is this supposed to be my Valentine's present?" she asked in disbelief.

"One of 'em, yeah," he said with a shrug. "What's the matter, lover? You don't like?"

"What do you mean, 'one of them'? Oh my god, your killing Riley was supposed to be my other one, wasn't it?" her hands covered her mouth in horror.

"Well...yeah," he said, not really getting what the big deal was.

"You are insane, do you know that?" she asked, a hysterical laugh ripping its way out of her throat. "When normal guys want to give the girl they love something special for Valentine's Day, it's usually roses or a heart shaped box of candy. You are so twisted, I'm surprised you didn't give me *Riley's* heart instead." Inside, he cringed to himself, thankful now that he *hadn't* given her the boy's heart. He supposed winning over someone like Drusilla was completely different than winning over Buffy, but hey, he was learning. "What are you trying to do to me? Are you trying to drive me insane like you did Dru?" she screamed at him, her voice raw with emotion.

"Of course not," he said dismissively. "I killed everyone that Dru loved to drive her insane. I'm just killing everybody that ever did you wrong to prove my love for you. In fact, if you got the time and the want, I can think of a brunette slayer and a snotty ex- cheerleader back in L.A. who could stand to get their come uppance."

"I hate you," she said bitterly. "I won't have you kill anyone else in the name of you supposed love for me. I'll fucking kill myself first."

He regarded her seriously for a moment before breaking into a wide grin and slamming the trunk shut. "Nah," he said, hoisting her up over his shoulder and carrying her back to the car. "I like you better alive and kicking," he said before dumping her into the passenger seat. He reached over unceremoniously and broke the door handle off of the inside of the car door. "In case you get any ideas," he explained before slamming the door. Walking around the car and climbing in the driver's side, he slammed his door shut and looked over at her. "Don't you get any ideas in that pretty little head of yours, Buff. You aren't going anywhere, and I won't allow you to hurt yourself. You are mine, princess, and one day, you'll accept me. Now be a good girl and don't make me knock you unconscious again, huh?" He leaned over and gave her a brutal kiss on the mouth, bruising her lips and forcing his tongue into her mouth. She bit down hard, causing him to yelp and pull back in pain. He touched his tongue gently, bringing back bloody fingers. "Now that's my girl," he said with a smirk. "I like it when you're rough, Buff," he told her, sticking his bloodied fingers in his mouth and sucking them clean. Then he started the ignition and pulled back onto the road, driving them to God knows where. The one thing that kept running through Buffy's mind was that she was on the highway to hell, and her guardian Angel was not coming back.
